Why Choose AristoGP for Your Pelvic Ultrasound?

  • Same-day scan — no separate appointment needed — your ultrasound is performed during your consultation, so you leave with answers the same day
  • Performed by a specialist consultant gynaecologist — Dr Anastasia Mermigka is a GMC-registered consultant with specialist expertise in women’s health, meaning she interprets findings in the full clinical context of your consultation
  • specialist high-resolution ultrasound — advanced OB/GYN ultrasound system — we use the same equipment found in NHS teaching hospitals. The specialist ultrasound features 3D/4D capability and high-resolution imaging optimised specifically for gynaecological and obstetric scanning
  • Results explained during your appointment — no waiting weeks for a letter. Dr Mermigka will talk you through the findings immediately
  • Written report provided — a formal ultrasound report is issued for your records and can be shared with your NHS GP or other specialists

What Is a Pelvic Ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound is a non-invasive or minimally invasive imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce detailed images of the pelvic organs — including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, and surrounding structures. It is one of the most important diagnostic tools in gynaecology and obstetrics.

Transvaginal vs Transabdominal Ultrasound

There are two approaches to pelvic ultrasound, and at AristoGP we use whichever is most clinically appropriate — or both if needed:

  • Transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) — a slim probe is gently inserted into the vagina, providing close-up, high-resolution images of the uterus and ovaries. This is usually the preferred approach as it gives clearer detail of pelvic structures, especially early in pregnancy or when investigating the endometrium or ovaries. Most women find it mildly uncomfortable rather than painful.
  • Transabdominal ultrasound (TAUS) — the probe is moved over the abdomen using a small amount of gel. This is a completely external, painless scan. It provides a wider field of view, useful for assessing larger structures or when a full bladder view is needed.

What Can a Pelvic Ultrasound Detect?

A pelvic ultrasound is used to assess a wide range of gynaecological conditions, including:

  • Fibroids — benign growths in or around the uterus that can cause heavy periods, pelvic pressure, and pain
  • Ovarian cysts — fluid-filled sacs on the ovaries, ranging from simple functional cysts to more complex types requiring monitoring or treatment
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) — a hormonal condition characterised by multiple small follicles on the ovaries, often alongside hormonal irregularities
  • Endometrial abnormalities — thickening of the uterine lining, polyps, or other changes that may indicate hormonal imbalance or, in some cases, malignancy
  • Early pregnancy — confirmation of an intrauterine pregnancy, dating, and assessment of fetal viability
  • Structural anomalies — congenital abnormalities of the uterus or other pelvic organs
  • Free fluid in the pelvis — which may indicate infection, rupture, or other pathology

When Might You Need a Pelvic Ultrasound?

A pelvic ultrasound may be recommended if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • Pelvic pain — persistent or intermittent lower abdominal or pelvic discomfort
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding — heavy periods, irregular bleeding, or bleeding between periods or after the menopause
  • Missed or irregular periods — particularly if pregnancy is not the explanation
  • Suspected PCOS — polycystic ovarian syndrome requires ultrasound assessment as part of the diagnostic criteria
  • Ovarian cysts — whether newly diagnosed or for routine surveillance of known cysts
  • Fibroids — confirmation, sizing, and monitoring of uterine fibroids
  • Early pregnancy concerns — confirmation of intrauterine pregnancy, assessment for ectopic pregnancy, or early pregnancy bleeding
  • Menopause symptoms — assessment of the endometrium and ovaries in perimenopausal or postmenopausal women
  • Fertility assessment — as part of a preliminary fertility investigation, including antral follicle count

What to Expect at Your Appointment

  1. Consultation first — Dr Mermigka will take a full medical and gynaecological history and discuss your symptoms and concerns in detail
  2. Clinical examination if appropriate — based on your history and symptoms
  3. Pelvic ultrasound — performed in the same room using the specialist high-resolution ultrasound. You will be asked to lie on the examination couch. If a transvaginal scan is performed, a slim probe covered with a sterile single-use cover is gently inserted into the vagina. Most patients find this straightforward; the doctor will always proceed at your pace.
  4. Immediate findings discussion — Dr Mermigka will explain what she has seen on the scan, discuss any findings, and answer your questions
  5. Written report and management plan — you will receive a formal written ultrasound report and a clear plan for any follow-up or treatment required

The entire appointment typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for a private pelvic ultrasound?

No. You can book directly with AristoGP without a referral from your GP. Simply contact us via WhatsApp or our online booking system and we will arrange a same-day or short-notice appointment.

Is a transvaginal ultrasound painful?

Most women find a transvaginal ultrasound mildly uncomfortable rather than painful — the probe is slim and the procedure takes only a few minutes. Dr Mermigka will always explain what she is doing and will proceed at your pace. If at any point you wish to stop, she will do so immediately. If you prefer, a transabdominal scan alone can be performed, though this may provide less detail in some cases.

How long does the pelvic ultrasound take?

The ultrasound scan itself takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. It is performed as part of your consultation, which typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes in total. You will not need a separate scanning appointment.

Can I have an ultrasound during pregnancy?

Yes. We offer an Early Pregnancy Assessment (Package H1 — £240) that includes a transvaginal ultrasound to confirm an intrauterine pregnancy, assess fetal viability, and provide gestational dating. This is suitable for early pregnancy from approximately 5 weeks, particularly for reassurance following early pregnancy bleeding, pain, or uncertainty about dates.

What ultrasound equipment do you use?

We use the specialist high-resolution ultrasound, an advanced obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound system that provides high-resolution 2D imaging alongside 3D and 4D capability. It is the same equipment found in NHS teaching hospitals and fertility clinics, ensuring high-quality imaging for accurate diagnosis.

How do I book a pelvic ultrasound appointment?

You can book via WhatsApp on +44 7490 643706 or using our online booking system. Same-day and short-notice appointments are frequently available. Please mention that you would like a pelvic ultrasound when booking so we can allocate the appropriate appointment time.
