Private Smear Test in Central London

AristoGp offers private cervical screening (smear tests) in Central London, performed by a specialist female gynaecologist. We offer short-notice appointments, with same-week availability and results reported promptly.

What Is a Smear Test?

A cervical smear test (now officially called a cervical screening test) is a simple procedure that collects a small sample of cells from the cervix. The sample is tested for the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) strains, which are the leading cause of cervical cancer. It is one of the most effective cancer prevention tools available.

The NHS recommends smear tests every 3 years for women aged 25–49 and every 5 years for women aged 50–64. However, many women seek a private smear test for faster access, greater comfort, or because they have missed their NHS recall.

Why Choose a Private Smear Test at AristoGp?

  • Performed by a specialist gynaecologist —  giving you specialist clinical assessment at the same time
  • Short-notice availability — same-week appointments are typically available
  • Comfortable, private setting — a relaxed clinic environment with no time pressure
  • High-risk HPV test included — covering 14 HPV types
  • Prompt written results report
  • Option to combine with a full gynaecology consultation — ideal if you have any additional concerns

What Happens During the Appointment?

  1. Brief pre-screening discussion — your medical history, symptoms, and any concerns
  2. The procedure — you will lie on an examination couch. A speculum is gently inserted and a soft brush collects a small sample of cells from the cervix. Most women find it mildly uncomfortable rather than painful, and it takes only a few minutes.
  3. Specialist equipment — the procedure is performed on a dedicated gynaecology examination plinth with adjustable positioning, designed for comfort during cervical screening. This is more comfortable than a standard flat examination couch
  4. Sample sent to the laboratory — for high-risk HPV testing and cytology if indicated
  5. Results — you will receive a written report, typically within 3–5 working days. Dr Mermigka will explain the results and advise on any follow-up needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a private smear test take?

The sample collection itself takes only 2–3 minutes. Allow around 20 minutes for the full appointment, including a brief discussion before and after.

Is a smear test painful?

Most women describe it as uncomfortable rather than painful — similar to mild period cramps. The doctor will work at your pace and stop at any point if you ask.

How long will I wait for results?

Laboratory results are typically available within 3–5 working days. You will receive a written report and the doctor will contact you to discuss the findings.

Can I have a smear test if I am pregnant?

Cervical screening is generally not recommended during pregnancy unless clinically indicated. Please discuss this with the doctor at your appointment.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with us without a referral.

Where is the clinic?

1–5 Portpool Lane, London EC1N 7UU. A 4-minute walk from Chancery Lane (Central Line) and 8 minutes from Farringdon (Elizabeth Line).

If you are also experiencing pelvic pain or abnormal bleeding, you may wish to consider our consultation with pelvic ultrasound package (from £270). View all our services and pricing.

Not sure what to book? Start with a F2F Gynaecology Consultation (£180) — your consultant can add any further investigations during the appointment. Any difference in cost will be discussed with you at the time. WhatsApp us if you would like guidance before booking.

What Happens During a Private Smear Test?

A smear test (cervical screening) is a quick procedure that checks for changes in the cells of your cervix. Here is what to expect at AristoGp:

  1. Consultation — Dr Mermigka will discuss your medical history, any symptoms, and answer your questions
  2. Preparation — you will be asked to undress from the waist down in complete privacy. A chaperone is available if you wish
  3. The test — a smooth instrument called a speculum is gently inserted to allow a view of the cervix. A small soft brush collects a sample of cells. This takes about 2 minutes
  4. After the test — you can get dressed and carry on with your day. Some women experience light spotting afterwards, which is normal
  5. Results — your sample is sent to the laboratory for HPV testing and liquid-based cytology. Results are typically available within 48 hours

Who Should Have a Private Smear Test?

The NHS offers free cervical screening for women aged 25-64. A private smear test may be suitable if you:

  • Are under 25 and sexually active — NHS screening starts at 25, but private screening is available earlier
  • Are over 64 — NHS screening stops at 64, but you may wish to continue
  • Have missed your NHS invitation or are overdue for screening
  • Want faster results — 48 hours at AristoGp vs several weeks via NHS
  • Prefer a female consultant gynaecologist to perform the test
  • Want a longer appointment where you can discuss symptoms or concerns
  • Are experiencing symptoms such as bleeding after sex, unusual discharge, or bleeding between periods
  • Want same-week availability without a long wait

How to Prepare for Your Smear Test

  • Avoid booking during your period — schedule for mid-cycle if possible
  • Avoid sexual intercourse for 24 hours before the test
  • Do not use vaginal creams, lubricants, or tampons for 2 days before
  • If you are being treated for an infection, wait until treatment is complete

Understanding Your Results

Your smear test results will fall into one of these categories:

  • HPV negative — no high-risk HPV detected. Your risk of cervical cancer is very low. Routine screening in 3-5 years is recommended
  • HPV positive, no cell changes — the virus is present but has not caused any abnormal cells. A repeat test in 12 months is usually recommended to check if your immune system has cleared the virus
  • HPV positive with cell changes — abnormal cells have been detected. Further investigation with colposcopy may be recommended
  • Inadequate sample — the sample could not be read clearly. A repeat test is needed after 3 months

Dr Mermigka will explain your results and discuss any next steps with you personally.

Why Choose AristoGp for Your Smear Test?

  • Consultant-performed — your smear is taken by Dr Anastasia Mermigka, a consultant gynaecologist, providing a higher level of clinical assessment than a nurse-led screening
  • From £150 — one of the most competitive prices in Central London for a consultant-performed screening
  • Results in 48 hours — significantly faster than the NHS (several weeks) or most private clinics (7-10 days)
  • Female consultant — all smear tests are performed by a female gynaecologist
  • Same-week appointments — Monday to Saturday availability
  • HPV + cytology included — both tests are included as standard in every screening
  • Multilingual — consultations in English, Greek, and Italian
  • Central London EC1 — 3 minutes from Chancery Lane tube station

How Much Does a Private Smear Test Cost in London?

Private smear test costs in London vary depending on the clinic and what is included. At AristoGp, our cervical screening is performed by a consultant gynaecologist — not a nurse — and includes liquid-based cytology and HPV testing as standard.

AristoGp Cervical Screening Prices

Package What’s Included Price
Smear Test Only Cervical screening sample (HPV + cytology) performed by consultant gynaecologist £150
Screening + Consultation Cervical screening + full gynaecology consultation to discuss results, symptoms, or any concerns £230
Comprehensive Screening Package HPV test + Pap smear cytology + full consultation + written report and follow-up plan £300

What Affects Private Smear Test Costs?

The cost of a private smear test in the UK depends on several factors:

  • Who performs the test — at AristoGp, your smear is taken by a consultant gynaecologist, which may differ from clinics where screening is performed by a practice nurse
  • What’s included — some clinics charge separately for HPV testing, cytology, and the consultation. Our packages include everything in one price
  • Location — Central London clinics typically charge more than clinics outside Zone 1. AristoGp is competitively priced for an EC1 location
  • Turnaround time — results are typically available within 48 hours at AristoGp

Is a Private Smear Test Worth It?

A private smear test may be suitable if you want results quickly, prefer a female consultant, are not eligible for NHS screening (under 25 or over 64), missed your NHS invitation, or simply want the reassurance of a longer appointment where you can discuss your results and any concerns. The NHS cervical screening programme is free and clinically appropriate for most women — a private test is an additional option, not a replacement.

Your Comfort During Examinations

We understand that gynaecological examinations can feel daunting — particularly if it is your first visit or you have had uncomfortable experiences in the past. That is why we have invested in the right environment and equipment to make your appointment as comfortable as possible.

All examinations at AristoGp are performed on a dedicated gynaecology examination plinth — purpose-built for women’s health assessments. Unlike a standard flat examination couch, our specialist plinth features:

  • Adjustable backrest and leg supports — so you are properly supported throughout, reducing discomfort during pelvic examinations and transvaginal ultrasound
  • Electric height adjustment — the plinth adjusts to the optimal position for both the patient and the clinician, meaning better clinical access and a shorter, more efficient examination
  • Designed for dignity — proper positioning means a more professional, less awkward experience compared with lying flat on a standard couch
  • Accessibility — electric height adjustment means the plinth can be lowered for patients with mobility considerations

Combined with a calm, private consultation room and a female consultant gynaecologist, our clinic is designed so that every patient feels safe, respected, and well cared for.
