Painful Periods Clinic in London

Period pain that stops your life is not normal and not something to endure. Consultant assessment with same-visit ultrasound to find the cause — and treat it.

Some period discomfort is common; pain that defeats painkillers, cancels plans or costs you work days is a medical symptom. Behind severe period pain there is often endometriosis, adenomyosis or fibroids — all treatable, none diagnosable by guesswork.

What to expect

Finding the cause, not masking it

Your history

When the pain comes, how long it lasts, and what it stops you doing — the pattern carries most of the diagnosis.

Pelvic ultrasound

Transvaginal ultrasound looks for adenomyosis, fibroids, ovarian cysts and other structural causes in the same appointment.

Examination

Gentle, explained first, and only where it will genuinely inform the plan.

Primary or secondary

Pain with no underlying disease behaves differently from pain caused by a condition — separating the two is the point of proper assessment.

Treatment

From targeted medication to treating the underlying condition — you leave with a plan, not a suggestion to take ibuprofen.

Urgent referral

If findings suggest anything requiring urgent specialist care, referral is arranged the same day.

Common questions

Questions about period pain

How much period pain is normal?

Mild cramping that responds to simple painkillers is common. Pain that makes you vomit, faint, miss work or dread each cycle is not — and deserves investigation.

What causes severe period pain?

Endometriosis and adenomyosis are the leading culprits, followed by fibroids and pelvic infection. In younger women pain often has no underlying disease — but that is a conclusion to reach after assessment, not before.

Why has my pain got worse over the years?

Worsening pain is a pattern that points towards a developing cause — classically endometriosis or adenomyosis — rather than simply how your periods are.

Will I need an internal scan?

A transvaginal scan gives much clearer views of the womb and ovaries, and is offered with everything explained first. An abdominal scan can be used where preferred.

Can painful periods be treated?

Yes — properly assessed and treated, most women get substantially better. The right treatment depends on the cause, which is why assessment comes first.

Should I also see my NHS GP?

Yes — severe period pain deserves NHS attention too. A private assessment gets you answers quickly, and we write to your GP with your consent.
