A teenager’s first gynaecology appointment sets the tone for how she looks after her health for decades. We keep it calm and unrushed: everything is explained first, nothing happens without consent, and a parent or guardian is welcome in the room.

A first appointment, done properly
Your history
What has been happening — periods that are heavy, painful, irregular or absent — discussed at her pace, with a parent present if she wishes.
Examination only if needed
Many teenage consultations need no examination at all. Where one would genuinely change the advice, it is explained first and only done with her consent, with a chaperone always available.
Ultrasound
Where imaging helps, a pelvic ultrasound can usually be performed abdominally — findings are explained in plain language.
What we commonly see
Heavy or painful periods, irregular or absent periods, suspected PCOS, and worries that simply need a proper conversation and reassurance.
When more is needed
Where blood tests or specialist referral are needed, they are arranged and explained — to her and, where appropriate, to her parents.
Urgent referral
If anything requires urgent specialist care, referral is arranged the same day.

Questions from parents and teenagers
From what age do you see patients?
We see teenagers on a case-by-case basis depending on what help is needed. Message us first with a brief outline and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right clinic, or point you towards a specialist paediatric gynaecology service if not.
Does a parent need to be present?
A parent or guardian is welcome, and for younger teenagers we encourage it. Older teenagers may also speak to the doctor alone for part of the appointment — trust matters in both directions.
Will there be an internal examination?
Almost never in teenagers. Most concerns are addressed through the conversation, and where imaging is needed an abdominal ultrasound is usually sufficient.
What about heavy or very painful periods?
Painful, heavy periods are common in the first years after periods start — but they are not something a teenager simply has to put up with. Assessment looks for treatable causes and ends with a clear plan.
Could it be PCOS?
Irregular periods, acne and excess hair growth in a teenager sometimes point to PCOS, but the diagnosis needs care at this age, since normal puberty can look similar. We assess properly rather than labelling early.
Is everything confidential?
Yes. Consultations are confidential in line with GMC guidance for young people. We involve parents in the way that works best for the teenager’s care.
