Reasons people book a consultant gynaecologist

A consultant appointment is not only for a diagnosed problem. These are the reasons women most often come to me at Portpool Lane. In most cases the pelvic ultrasound is performed during the same visit.

Questions patients ask

Do I need a referral to see you?

No. If you are paying for yourself you can book directly. You do not need a referral from your NHS GP and you do not need to be registered with the clinic.

Will I have the ultrasound in the same appointment?

Where it is clinically appropriate, yes. I perform and interpret the scan myself during the consultation, transvaginal or transabdominal, and explain the findings before you leave. You are not sent elsewhere and asked to return for results.

How long is the appointment?

Forty-five minutes. That is long enough to take a proper history, examine you where it helps, perform the scan and explain what it shows.

Which languages do you consult in?

English, Greek and Italian. There is no need to bring an interpreter or a family member to translate. The written report is in English, as the UK system requires, and is explained to you during the consultation.

Can I be seen during my period?

Yes. The ultrasound is performed as normal. Only the sample for cervical screening is better deferred until the bleeding has settled.

What is not provided at this clinic?

Colposcopy, coil fitting and antenatal or delivery care are not provided here. Where any of these is needed I issue a written referral to the appropriate service.

How much does it cost?

A gynaecology consultation is £200 and a consultation with pelvic ultrasound is £300. The complete Well Woman check, including cervical screening, is £380. Fees are published in advance.
