Colposcopy Referral in London — What You Need to Know
If you have received an abnormal smear test result or tested positive for HPV, you may need a colposcopy. At Aristo Gynaecology & GP Clinic, Dr Anastasia Mermigka can assess your cervical screening results, explain what they mean, and arrange a prompt referral for colposcopy at a specialist centre if needed.
Important: Aristo Gynaecology & GP Clinic does not perform colposcopy on site. We provide cervical screening, result interpretation, and fast-track referral to a colposcopy specialist where clinically indicated.
What Is Colposcopy?
Colposcopy is a detailed examination of the cervix using a special magnifying instrument called a colposcope. It is usually recommended after an abnormal smear test result to get a closer look at the cervical cells and determine whether treatment is needed.
During a colposcopy, a specialist may apply a solution to the cervix to highlight any abnormal areas. If necessary, a small tissue sample (biopsy) can be taken for laboratory analysis. The procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes.
When Is Colposcopy Needed?
You may be referred for colposcopy if:
- Your smear test shows HPV-positive with cell changes (abnormal cytology)
- You have had persistent HPV over two or more screening rounds
- Your smear result shows high-grade cell changes (moderate or severe dyskaryosis)
- You have symptoms such as bleeding after intercourse, unusual discharge, or post-menopausal bleeding that need further investigation
- A previous colposcopy recommended follow-up
How Aristo Gynaecology & GP Clinic Can Help
Cervical Screening and Assessment
If you are concerned about your cervical health or have received an abnormal result from another provider, Dr Mermigka can review your results, repeat your smear test if needed, and carry out a full gynaecological assessment. Our cervical screening includes both HPV testing and liquid-based cytology, with results typically within 48 hours.
Result Interpretation
Abnormal smear results can be confusing and worrying. Dr Mermigka will explain exactly what your results mean, whether further investigation is needed, and what your options are. Not all abnormal results require colposcopy — many low-grade changes resolve on their own and only need monitoring.
Fast-Track Colposcopy Referral
If colposcopy is clinically indicated, Dr Mermigka can arrange a prompt referral to a specialist colposcopy centre. This can be to an NHS colposcopy clinic (via your GP) or to a private specialist, depending on your preference. A referral letter with your full clinical history and screening results will be provided.
What to Expect After Colposcopy
After your colposcopy at the specialist centre:
- You may experience light spotting for a few days — this is normal
- Avoid tampons, swimming, and sexual intercourse for a few days after
- If a biopsy was taken, results usually take 2-4 weeks
- You can return to Aristo Gynaecology & GP Clinic for follow-up screening and ongoing monitoring

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a colposcopy if my smear test is abnormal?
Not always. Low-grade cell changes often resolve on their own and are monitored with a repeat smear in 12 months. Colposcopy is typically recommended for high-grade changes, persistent HPV, or if your clinician wants a closer look at the cervix.
Can I get a colposcopy at Aristo Gynaecology & GP Clinic?
Aristo Gynaecology & GP Clinic does not perform colposcopy on site. However, Dr Mermigka can assess your results, advise whether colposcopy is needed, and arrange a prompt referral to a specialist colposcopy centre — either NHS or private.
How quickly can I get a colposcopy referral?
Dr Mermigka can provide a referral letter at your consultation appointment. For private colposcopy, you can typically be seen within 1-2 weeks. NHS colposcopy waiting times vary but urgent referrals are prioritised.
What happens if colposcopy finds abnormal cells?
If abnormal cells are confirmed, the colposcopy specialist may recommend treatment such as LLETZ (loop excision) to remove the affected area. This is a straightforward outpatient procedure. After treatment, you will have follow-up smear tests to confirm the abnormal cells have been cleared. Aristo Gynaecology & GP Clinic can provide your ongoing follow-up screening.
