Questions about HPV testing
What is HPV and why test for it?
Human papillomavirus is a very common virus; most people have it at some point. A small group of high-risk types cause almost all cervical cancers, which is why modern screening tests for the virus first.
Do I need a smear as well?
The HPV test is taken the same way as a smear, from the same sample. If HPV is found, cytology is added at no extra charge — so one visit covers both.
Is a positive HPV test serious?
Usually not. Most infections clear within one to two years. A positive result means closer monitoring — cytology, sometimes colposcopy — not that anything is wrong today.
I have had the HPV vaccine. Should I still test?
Yes. The vaccine covers the most important types but not all 14 high-risk types, so screening is still recommended for vaccinated women.
How is this different from NHS screening?
The test is the same. The differences are timing and access: no invitation needed, same-day appointments, results in days, and a consultant explaining the result.
Can I test without a consultation?
Yes — the 15-minute screening visit (£150) is the test only, taken by a consultant who also explains the result. A full consultation can be added if anything needs discussing.
