The appointment is 45 minutes, includes a pelvic ultrasound interpreted in real time, and ends with a written report. No referral is needed.
What the Appointment Includes
- Clinical consultation: Dr Mermigka takes a full gynaecological and reproductive history, including your cycle pattern, any symptoms, previous pregnancies, contraception history, and your plans and timeline. This context is essential for interpreting your scan findings correctly.
- Antral follicle count (AFC): A transvaginal pelvic ultrasound that counts the small resting follicles visible on each ovary. The antral follicle count is one of the most reliable direct measures of ovarian reserve available. It is performed and interpreted by Dr Mermigka in real time during your appointment.
- Uterine assessment: The scan evaluates the uterine cavity and lining for structural abnormalities including fibroids, polyps, and congenital variations that may be relevant to future fertility.
- Ovarian morphology: Overall ovarian size, appearance, and any features consistent with PCOS are assessed and documented.

Optional Blood Tests
Blood tests can be arranged at the clinic if Dr Mermigka recommends them based on your scan findings. Commonly added tests include AMH (anti-Mullerian hormone), FSH, LH and oestradiol (useful if your cycle is irregular), and TSH (thyroid function). Samples are processed by TDL with most results in 24 to 72 hours. Results are reviewed by Dr Mermigka and sent by email with a written explanation at no extra charge.

Do I need a referral for a Fertility MOT?

Does a Fertility MOT tell me whether I can get pregnant?
It tells you about your ovarian reserve and uterine structure. It cannot predict whether you will conceive, but it gives you the clearest available picture of your reproductive status and allows Dr Mermigka to advise on next steps.
What is an antral follicle count?
An antral follicle count (AFC) is a transvaginal ultrasound measurement of the small resting follicles visible on each ovary. Each follicle represents a potential egg. The AFC is one of the most reliable available measures of ovarian reserve and is interpreted alongside your age and clinical history.
What day of my cycle should I attend?
The antral follicle count is most accurate in the early follicular phase, ideally days 2 to 5 of your cycle. Dr Mermigka can advise on timing when you book.
Should I also have an AMH blood test?
AMH provides a blood-based measure of ovarian reserve that complements the antral follicle count. Dr Mermigka will advise during the appointment whether an AMH test adds useful information in your specific case. If recommended, the sample is taken at the clinic and the result is reviewed at no extra charge.
What if the scan finds something unexpected?
If the scan identifies fibroids, ovarian cysts, or other findings, Dr Mermigka will explain their significance and advise on whether further investigation or management is needed. A follow-up appointment or referral can be arranged.
