Choosing your check

Two ways to have a Well Woman check

Both are led by consultant gynaecologist Dr Anastasia Mermigka, and neither needs a GP referral. The difference is whether a scan and cervical screening are included from the start.

Routine Well Woman Check, £200. A 45-minute consultant review for women without a specific concern: menstrual and gynaecological history, pregnancy and fertility plans, menopause symptoms where relevant, cervical screening history, breast health history, blood pressure and BMI, abdominal and external examination, and a speculum or internal examination if needed and with your consent. You leave with written recommendations. A scan or screening test is only added if it is needed.

Complete Well Woman Check, £380. Everything in the routine check, plus a pelvic ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries and cervical screening with high-risk HPV testing, in the same visit. Scan findings are explained before you leave.

Which to choose

A simple rule of thumb

Choose the routine check if you feel well, your cervical screening is up to date and you want a considered review with a consultant.

Choose the complete check if you are due or overdue cervical screening, have any symptoms such as irregular bleeding or pelvic discomfort, or have not had a pelvic scan before and want a baseline.

If you are unsure, book the routine check. If a scan or screening turns out to be worthwhile, it can usually be added on the day.

By life stage

What a Well Woman check focuses on at your age

In your 20s and 30s. Periods, contraception questions, cervical screening and any symptoms you have been putting off. NHS cervical screening starts at 25; privately you can be screened at any age.

Planning a pregnancy. A review of cycles, medical history and lifestyle before you try. For a dedicated appointment see our pre-pregnancy health check or Fertility MOT.

In your 40s. Changes in bleeding pattern, heavier periods, fibroids and the first signs of perimenopause. A scan at this stage gives a useful baseline.

Around and after menopause. Symptom review, HRT questions, vaginal dryness and any bleeding after menopause, which should always be checked. See our menopause consultation for a full assessment.

Good to know

Not included in the fee

Blood tests. Blood is not taken at the clinic itself. If Dr Mermigka recommends tests, she requests them from our laboratory, The Doctors Laboratory (TDL). You have your blood taken at TDL Patient Reception, 76 Wimpole Street, W1 (walk-in, Monday to Saturday), and the results come back to her. We recommend a follow-up appointment with Dr Mermigka to go through the results together. If anything needs prompt attention, she will contact you directly.

Breast imaging. The check covers breast health history and awareness, but not a mammogram or breast ultrasound. The NHS breast screening programme continues to invite women from 50.

NHS or private

Is a Well Woman check available on the NHS?

Not as a single appointment. The NHS offers cervical screening from 25 to 64 and breast screening from 50, and your GP will see you for specific symptoms. A private Well Woman check brings a consultant review, examination and, if you choose, a scan and screening into one unhurried visit, without a referral or a waiting list.

The clinic is at 1-5 Portpool Lane, London EC1N 7UU, a few minutes from Chancery Lane and Farringdon stations.

Common questions

Questions about the Well Woman check

What is included for £380?

A consultant gynaecology consultation, a pelvic ultrasound and cervical screening with the high-risk HPV test (14 types), all in one visit, with the findings explained the same day and a written summary afterwards. A cytology (Pap) report is added at no extra cost only if HPV is found. If you want HPV and Pap reported together whatever the result, that is the separate £230 co-test.

How long does the appointment take?

Allow around an hour. It covers a full history, examination, the scan and the screening sample, with time to discuss what the findings mean rather than being handed a report.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book directly with Dr Mermigka, and you do not need to be registered with an NHS GP.

What is the difference between the £200 and £380 checks?

The £200 routine check is a consultant review and examination, with tests added only if needed. The £380 complete check always includes a pelvic ultrasound and cervical screening with HPV testing in the same visit.

Are blood tests included?

They are not part of the check. If tests are recommended, Dr Mermigka requests them from our laboratory, TDL, and you have your blood taken at TDL Patient Reception, 76 Wimpole Street, W1. The results come back to her, and we recommend a follow-up appointment to go through them together. If anything needs prompt attention, she will contact you directly.

How often should I have one?

For most women without symptoms, every one to two years is reasonable, with cervical screening following the standard interval. If you have a family history of ovarian or breast cancer, or ongoing symptoms, more frequent review may be appropriate.

Is this the same as a private health MOT?

No. General health screens are broad. This is gynaecology-specific and consultant-led, focused on the uterus, ovaries, cervix and any symptoms you have noticed.

Can I have this if I am postmenopausal?

Yes, and it is often more useful then. The scan assesses the womb lining and ovaries, which is exactly what matters if you have had any bleeding since the menopause. Bleeding after the menopause should always be investigated promptly.

Which cervical screening is included?

The check includes high-risk HPV DNA testing for 14 types. If HPV is found, the cytology report is added from the same sample at no extra charge.

If you would rather have HPV and cytology reported together whatever the result — as is standard screening in several European countries — that is available as a separate screening appointment (B3) at £230. It is not a more accurate route, and we will say so; it is offered because some patients prefer both. How the two routes differ.
