A fit note (also called a sick note or Statement of Fitness for Work) is an official document issued by a GMC-registered doctor confirming that a patient is unfit for work, or fit for work with adjustments. At AristoGP, Dr Georgios Schoinas can issue fit notes at a private GP appointment without a referral or prior registration. Same-day appointments are available.
What Is a Fit Note?
- A fit note is an official medical certificate issued on a standard NHS form (MED3) by any GMC-registered doctor, including private GPs
- It can state that you are not fit for work, or that you may be fit for work with adjustments such as reduced hours, amended duties, or a phased return
- Fit notes are valid from day 8 of illness onwards. For the first 7 days of absence, self-certification is sufficient and no medical certificate is required
- Fit notes issued by a private GP are legally identical to those issued by an NHS GP and are accepted by all UK employers
Other Certificates and Letters Dr Schoinas Can Provide
- Sick note for employer: A private letter confirming illness or incapacity for work, for employers who require documentation before the 7-day self-certification period
- Return-to-work letter: Confirming medical clearance to return to work after illness or surgery
- Referral letters: To NHS or private specialists, physiotherapists, or other healthcare providers
- Prescription: For medications required to manage your condition
- Medical report for insurance: Documentation supporting an insurance claim related to illness or injury

Can a private GP issue a fit note?
Yes. Any GMC-registered doctor can issue a fit note on the official MED3 form. A fit note from a private GP carries exactly the same legal weight as one from an NHS GP and must be accepted by your employer.
Can I get a fit note from day 1 of illness?
For the first 7 days of any illness, self-certification is sufficient under UK law. A formal fit note is only required from day 8 onwards. However, if your employer requires documentation earlier, Dr Schoinas can issue a private sick note letter at his discretion following a clinical assessment.
How much does a sick note cost at a private GP?
The GP appointment at AristoGP costs £100. A fit note or sick note is issued at the appointment where clinically appropriate. No referral or prior registration is needed.
Can I get a same-day sick note?
We offer same-day GP appointments at AristoGP. If you need a fit note urgently, contact us by WhatsApp or phone and we will do our best to arrange a prompt appointment.
