Common questions

Ovarian cysts: what patients ask

Are ovarian cysts dangerous?

The great majority are simple functional cysts linked to ovulation, and they resolve on their own within a cycle or two. Only a minority have features that need closer monitoring.

Does the size determine how serious a cyst is?

Not on its own. A simple 4cm cyst in a young woman is an unremarkable finding, while a complex 3cm cyst merits attention. The ultrasound description matters more than the diameter.

When should a cyst be rescanned?

A probable functional cyst is usually rechecked after six to eight weeks, at a different point in the cycle. If it was functional it will have resolved or shrunk.

Do ovarian cysts affect fertility?

Usually not. Endometriomas and very large cysts can, and these are assessed separately with fertility in mind.

When is cyst pain urgent?

Sudden intense pain on one side with nausea, vomiting or fainting requires emergency assessment. It can indicate torsion of the ovary or rupture of a cyst.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Self-paying patients can book directly, often the same day.
