Private gynaecology in London is priced inconsistently, and the headline figure rarely tells you what you will actually pay. A consultation quoted at £200 can become £450 once a scan is added, and some clinics quote the consultation alone while others include imaging. Fees are published rather than quoted on enquiry, agreed before the appointment and paid on the day. There is no registration fee and no membership.
Why quoted prices vary so much across London
Three things account for most of the spread.
- Whether imaging is included. A consultation without a scan is cheaper to advertise. If your symptoms need imaging, you will pay for it either way, so compare the combined figure rather than the entry price.
- Who performs the scan. Where the scan and the written report are handled as separate steps, you wait for the report and pay for two elements. Where the consultant scans during the consultation, you are told the findings before you leave.
- Location and overheads. Harley Street and Marylebone addresses carry a premium that reflects rent rather than clinical quality.
Questions worth asking before you book anywhere
- What is the grade of the clinician carrying out the consultation?
- Does the fee include a scan if one is clinically needed, or is that charged separately?
- Will I get the scan findings during the appointment, or wait for a report?
- Is a written summary included, and can it be sent to my NHS GP?
- What does a follow-up cost, and is there a reduced rate within a set period?
- If I need a procedure you do not provide, is the referral arranged for me?
What you should expect for the money
At the price of a private gynaecology appointment, these are reasonable expectations rather than extras: an unhurried consultation with the consultant who will manage your care, imaging in the same visit where it is indicated, findings explained in plain language before you leave, and a written plan. If a clinic cannot tell you what happens after the appointment, that is worth knowing before you pay.
