Questions about seeing a private GP
How long is the appointment?
Thirty minutes, which is roughly three times a standard NHS slot. It means more than one problem can be dealt with properly in a single visit rather than being asked to rebook.
Can you prescribe?
Yes. Private prescriptions are issued at the appointment and can be taken to any pharmacy. The cost of the medication itself is set by the pharmacy and is separate from the consultation fee.
Can you refer me to a specialist?
Yes, privately or back into the NHS where that is the better route. A referral letter with the relevant history and any test results is provided, which is what makes a referral useful.
Do you do sick notes?
Yes, where clinically appropriate. A private medical certificate is accepted by most employers. For absence beyond seven days your employer may specifically request an NHS fit note, so it is worth checking what they require.
