Private Gynaecology Without Insurance
You do not need private medical insurance to see a consultant gynaecologist. At Aristo Gynaecology & GP we are a self-pay clinic: you book directly, you know the price before you arrive, and you pay at the time of your consultation.
No referral. No pre-authorisation. No claim forms, and no shortfall invoice weeks later.
What it costs

Why patients choose self-pay
Often simpler than going through an insurer
Private medical insurance suits some patients well. For a single gynaecology consultation, though, self-pay is frequently faster and more predictable.
No pre-authorisation. Insurers often require a GP referral and an authorisation code before you can be seen. Self-pay removes both steps, which is why same-day appointments are possible.
No shortfall. Insurers reimburse up to their own fee schedule, and any difference falls to you. Our published price is the price.
No effect on your premium or exclusions. A self-pay consultation is not a claim, so it does not affect your policy or create a pre-existing condition exclusion.
Complete confidentiality. No third party is told the reason for your appointment.
We do not invoice private medical insurers and are not registered with insurance providers. If you intend to claim on a policy, please check with your insurer before booking, as they may not reimburse fees paid directly to a non-registered provider.
Paying for private care
What paying for gynaecology without insurance actually involves
Three routes to the same appointment, with different trade-offs. Being straightforward about all three is more useful than selling you one.
Paying yourself
You book directly and pay the published fee on the day. No referral, no pre-authorisation, no claim form. You choose the consultant and the date, and nothing is reported to an insurer or added to your medical insurance record.
Consultation £200. With a pelvic scan, £300.
Through insurance
Most insurers require a GP referral and an authorisation code before the appointment, and will not pay retrospectively. Cover depends on your policy, and pre-existing conditions are commonly excluded. Claims may affect your renewal premium.
Often slower to arrange than paying directly.
On the NHS
Free at the point of use, and the right route for most people. Waiting times for a routine gynaecology referral in London commonly run to several months, and you do not choose who you see. Urgent and suspected-cancer pathways are considerably faster.
Keep your NHS GP either way.
Common questions
Questions about paying without insurance
Can I have private gynaecology treatment without health insurance?
Yes. Most private gynaecology in the UK is paid for directly by the patient rather than through insurance. You do not need a policy, a referral or an authorisation code. You book the appointment, and you pay the published fee on the day.
How much does it cost to pay for private gynaecology yourself?
At AristoGP a consultant gynaecology consultation is £200, or £300 with a pelvic ultrasound in the same visit. Cervical screening starts at £150 and the complete Well Woman check is £380. Across London, a first consultation typically ranges from around £150 to £350 depending on the clinic and the consultant.
Is paying yourself cheaper than using insurance?
Not usually cheaper in absolute terms, but often simpler and sometimes better value. Insurers reimburse up to their own fee schedule, so a shortfall can leave you paying the difference anyway. If your policy excludes the condition, or you have an excess to meet first, paying directly can work out similar or less.
Can I use a private GP while registered with the NHS?
Yes, and it changes nothing about your NHS registration. You remain with your NHS practice for ongoing and emergency care. A private consultation sits alongside that rather than replacing it, and findings can be shared with your NHS GP with your consent.
Will I need to pay extra for tests on the day?
Anything additional is priced and agreed with you before it is carried out. Blood tests carry a £39 collection fee with laboratory analysis charged according to the tests requested. Nothing is added without your agreement, and there is no separate facility or registration fee.
Do I need a GP referral to pay privately?
No, not if you are paying yourself. You can book a consultant appointment directly. A referral only becomes necessary if you intend to claim on private medical insurance, and in that case it must be arranged before the appointment rather than afterwards.
Does paying privately affect my NHS treatment?
No. Choosing to pay for a consultation or a scan does not affect your position on any NHS waiting list or your entitlement to NHS care. If private assessment identifies something needing NHS treatment, the findings and report support that referral.
What if I cannot afford the full assessment?
Start with what answers the question. A consultation alone is £200 and often establishes whether imaging is needed at all. You are not obliged to book a package, and we will say plainly if something can wait or be done more cheaply on the NHS.
