Common questions

Heavy periods: what patients ask

What actually counts as a heavy period?

Bleeding that interferes with your daily life is heavy enough to investigate. Changing protection hourly, flooding, passing large clots or needing double protection are all reasons to be assessed.

Why is a blood test needed as well as a scan?

Heavy bleeding commonly causes iron deficiency long before anaemia shows on a full blood count. Ferritin is checked alongside the ultrasound, and correcting low iron often resolves the fatigue and breathlessness.

Can fibroids be treated without surgery?

Frequently, yes. Medical management and hormonal options, including the levonorgestrel intrauterine system, control bleeding in many cases. Position matters more than size when deciding what will work.

Can I be seen while I am bleeding?

Yes. The ultrasound is performed as normal. Only the sample for HPV testing is better deferred until the bleeding has settled.

When is heavy bleeding a sign of something serious?

Usually it is not. But bleeding after the menopause, between periods, or after sex should always be assessed promptly rather than monitored.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. Self-paying patients can book directly, often the same day.
